What is a .csv file?

A Comma Separated Values (CSV) file is a plain text file that contains a list of data. This makes it easier to import and organize large amounts of data.

You can use .csv files to upload information on many assets to your Asset Library at the same time.

Create your .csv file

It’s simple to create a .csv file:

  1. Create a four-column table in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  2. Enter the following details for each of your assets into the table:
    • Asset ID (a unique identifier for each asset, to keep your .csv file organized and keep track of which assets have been added to EarthScan)
    • Latitude (North-South Geographic coordinates)
    • Longitude (East-West Geographic coordinates)
    • Asset Name (the label for each asset in the frontend of EarthScan)

Please note: Latitude values to the south and longitude values to the west will be negative values.

Example .csv template:

Geographic coordinates top tips:

  • geographic coordinates must be entered in a decimal degree format i.e. 51.53740, -0.04917, not 40° 51' 59" N, 124° 4' 58" W
  • include a minimum of 5 decimal places, i.e. 0.00001, to ensure coordinate accuracy

Please note: All column headings must be in lowercase

How to find geographic coordinates for your assets

If you don’t already have them available and are unsure of how to find latitude and longitude coordinates for your Assets, you can generate them easily through Google Maps:

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps
  2. Use the search function to locate your asset.
  3. Right-click the place or area your asset is located on the map.
  4. Google displays a menu with the latitude and longitude values at the top of the list.
  5. To copy the coordinates automatically, click on the coordinates.
  6. Paste the coordinates into your file.

Save your .csv file

Once you’ve entered the required details for all of the assets you want to upload, save the file in a .csv format:

  1. In your spreadsheet program, click 'File'.
  2. Click 'Save As'.
  3. Click 'Browse' to choose where you want to save your file.
