The EarthScan Navigation Panel: EarthScan Rating

Understand how to use EarthScan Ratings™

After reading this article, you will learn:

What is an EarthScan Rating?

EarthScan Ratings are a globally standardized framework of the potential for climate-related risks to cause physical damage and disruption to built assets.

Assets experience physical damage and/or disruption when a climate hazard event exceeds a certain threshold, or when they experience hazards at higher levels of intensity than typical conditions. Ratings estimate the probability of climate hazard events with the potential to create physical damage and disruption to your asset or its operations and create financial costs related to your asset.

Available for every Risk Category, EarthScan Ratings provide globally comparable estimates of climate hazard exposure and direct physical damage to assets across multiple time frames, geographies and future climate scenarios

How to use EarthScan Ratings

EarthScan Ratings are a starting point for understanding your asset-level risk, providing an overview of your exposure to climate hazards and their potential impact. Use EarthScan Ratings to differentiate asset-level exposure and impact across geographies and time frames for your assets and portfolios.

Your assets and portfolios are assigned one of six EarthScan Ratings, running from Rating A (very low climate-related risk) to Rating F (extremely high climate-related risk.) EarthScan Ratings are assigned based on a projected score between 0-999. Your score indicates your risk of climate hazard events that have the potential to cause physical damage and/or disruption to your physical assets.

Higher scores represent better EarthScan Ratings with lower climate-related risk. (A is the best EarthScan Rating and indicates very low climate-related risk). Lower scores represent worse EarthScan Ratings with higher climate-related risk. (F is the worst EarthScan Rating and indicates extremely high climate-related risk.)

Where are the EarthScan Ratings located in EarthScan?

The EarthScan Rating control is located within the central dropdown menu in the Navigation Panel.

How are EarthScan Ratings calculated?

EarthScan Ratings are calculated using a standardized methodology based on the statistical properties of physical metrics in each Risk Category.
